Interview Coaching

Stand out with Morgan Spencer’s professional CV writing - expert formatting, tailored content & recruiter-approved templates.

CV Writing

The presentation of your CV is probably of the most important aspect in your search for a job. It is the first thing a prospective employer sees, and the impression it gives will determine your chance of getting an interview.

Always remember to include the following:

Name

Address

Telephone numbers and email address

Profile / career summary (optional)

Education history, preferably including grades

Skills, including computer applications and typing speeds

Languages

Other qualifications

Employment history

Interests and hobbies

At least two referees

Presentation:

Avoid small or elaborate fonts.

Using BOLD, Underline and Italic features help to make points in your CV stand out. However do not over elaborate as it can make your CV look cluttered.

Whether a potential employer calls you into an interview or not can all depend on the quality and presentation of your CV. In today's competitive marketplace the need to sell yourself effectively is increasingly important. In a normal selection process you have two crucial opportunities to create the right impression to your prospective employers, your CV and your interview. Your CV is the first thing a potential employer judges you on. It is your own personal selling tool. Your CV gives you about two minutes to create the right impression and if it is right you will gain an interview.

How do you create your CV?

Assemble all the facts and list the information you need to include in your CV. It won't be perfect on the first attempt. When you have decided what you want to include you will then be able to work on the layout of it.

What do you include?

You should always start with your name, and all contact details, i.e. email, mobile, home and work numbers, and of course your postal address.

Education comes next. This should include your secondary school and higher education ensuring that you include dates, the name of your school, the number of O Levels / GCSEs or A Levels (or the equivalent if from overseas) including subjects and grades.
You must also list degree courses, university / college and then any further courses that you might have done.

Work History should be presented in reverse chronological order, i.e. your most recent position listed first.
Give details of the companies you have worked for with the titles of the positions you held.
Duties should be listed in bullet points as this makes it easy reading.
Specify the period you were working for each company, i.e. the year and month, ensuring that you include the content of the position.
It will make your life easier if you think of your job in terms of the tasks you performed, the level of responsibility and any achievements.
The detail you put in should always be factual and should always be in the past tense.

You must always include any systems experience you have gained, including spreadsheets, word processing etc.

If you have taken a year out or indeed a few months to go travelling put it down. Gaps on a CV only raise eyebrows!

Be honest!

When your CV is finished ideally it should be no more than two pages long, or three at a push. Keep the detail factual, and don't waffle.

Your CV must always be word-processed - it looks far more professional.

Before you even send your CV to a potential employer, make sure a friend or relative has read it for you. They will then be able to offer constructive advice if they feel the need to.

If you are unsure about anything or you have more questions, please make sure you contact Morgan Spencer who will be only too happy to advise you further and we can even send you a CV template for you to use for free.

Remember, the CV will get you the interview!

Hire Executive Assistants for C-Suite Leaders in London

C-suite Executive Assistant recruitment involves sourcing high-level support professionals who manage strategic operations for board-level leaders. Our executive assistant recruitment services identify elite talent capable of handling complex stakeholder management and strategic diary coordination. We ensure your leadership team gains a trusted partner to drive organisational efficiency and executive focus.

Key Takeaways

Strategic Partnership - We place EAs who act as Chiefs of Staff, not just administrative support, managing business-critical projects.

London Network - Our reach extends to the "shadow market" of passive candidates in the City and Canary Wharf financial districts.

Cultural Alignment - We assess emotional intelligence (EQ) to ensure candidates thrive in high-pressure board environments.

Market Reality - We advise on competitive compensation, with London C-suite support salaries typically ranging from £70,000 to £100,000+.

Why Partner with a C-Suite Executive Assistant Recruitment Agency?

How does a specialist recruiter access passive board-level talent?

Accessing the top 15% of London's support talent requires bypassing public job boards to engage directly with employed professionals in the Financial District. We utilise confidential headhunting protocols to approach candidates currently supporting FTSE 250 leaders, ensuring discretion while tapping into networks unavailable to internal HR teams. This direct approach allows us to recruit for those niche positions where confidentiality and specific industry experience are non-negotiable.

What specific competencies define a successful CEO support partner?

A successful partner demonstrates commercial acumen and the ability to execute decisions on behalf of the principal. Beyond standard administration, these professionals possess the emotional intelligence to manage board dynamics and the operational rigour to oversee private offices. Our data indicates that 85% of successful C-suite placements rely on the candidate's ability to anticipate executive needs before they are articulated, a trait we validate through behavioural interviewing.

Strategic Board-Level Support for London Leaders

Can an Executive Assistant manage complex stakeholder relationships?

Elite EAs manage stakeholders by acting as a proxy for the CEO, filtering communications and resolving conflicts to protect executive time. By understanding the political nuance of the organisation, they prioritise access based on strategic value, effectively managing workplace conflict before it escalates. This gatekeeping function ensures that leadership focuses solely on high-impact decisions rather than operational noise.

How does strategic diary management impact leadership productivity?

Strategic scheduling aligns the executive's time with quarterly business objectives rather than reacting to inbound requests. This approach transforms the calendar into a tool for operational efficiency, where effective diary management ensures that 40-50% of the week is preserved for strategic thinking. We verify that candidates can audit current scheduling habits and implement structures that recover lost hours for the C-suite.

How We Recruit C-Suite Executive Assistants

Requirement Profiling & Benchmarking We audit your specific board-level requirements, defining the necessary Tier standards and commercial exposure required. This includes benchmarking the role against current London salary data to ensure the proposition attracts elite talent.

Passive Market Mapping We target employed candidates within competitor organisations and the wider London corporate sector. Our team identifies individuals who are not actively looking but possess the specific sector experience-such as Financial Services or Private Equity-required for your board.

Competency & EQ Assessment We verify technical skills and emotional intelligence through rigorous scenario-based testing. We assess a candidate's ability to handle crisis management, draft board papers, and maintain confidentiality under pressure.

Cultural Fit Verification We ensure the candidate aligns with your specific leadership style and organisational pace. By evaluating their past performance in similar high-pressure environments, we mitigate the risk of early attrition and ensure a long-term partnership.

FAQs

What is the average salary for a C-suite Executive Assistant in London?

The average salary for a C-suite Executive Assistant in London typically ranges from £70,000 to over £100,000 per annum. This figure depends on the specific industry, the complexity of the role, and the level of responsibility, such as managing international travel or overseeing a private office for a CEO.

How do I find a high-level Executive Assistant for a CEO?

Finding a high-level Executive Assistant for a CEO requires engaging a specialist recruitment agency with a deep network in the London corporate sector. These experts use targeted search methodologies to identify candidates with proven experience in board-level support, ensuring they possess the necessary discretion and strategic thinking skills.

What are the key competencies of a board-level Executive Assistant?

Key competencies of a board-level Executive Assistant include advanced stakeholder management, strategic diary coordination, and exceptional communication skills. These professionals must demonstrate high emotional intelligence, the ability to anticipate executive needs, and a thorough understanding of corporate governance to effectively support leaders in high-pressure environments.

What is the difference between a PA and a C-suite Executive Assistant?

A C-suite Executive Assistant operates at a higher strategic level than a traditional Personal Assistant. While a PA focuses on administrative tasks, a C-suite EA often acts as a gatekeeper and advisor, managing complex projects, attending board meetings, and ensuring the executive's time is aligned with the organisation's primary goals.

Secure Your Strategic Partner

To secure a C-suite Executive Assistant who delivers immediate operational ROI and protects your time, contact our London specialist team today to discuss your requirements.

Totaljobs research cited by Morgan Spencer shows 67% of recruiters struggle to find candidates with the right skill set, rising to 75% at senior partner level. Average time-to-hire has stretched from 6 weeks in 2023 to 8 weeks in 2025, and counter-offer frequency now affects 35% of senior EA candidates during notice. The Michael Page 2025 salary guides report 60% of organisations have struggled to hire over the last 12 months, with 49% citing salary expectations and 48% citing skills gaps. Law firms compound this because they require sector-specific tech (iManage, BigHand) layered on top of the EA skills, narrowing the candidate pool further.

Contract Versus Permanent Trends

Permanent placement dominates legal EA hiring at roughly 80% of senior placements, driven by partners' need for continuity and confidentiality. Contract usage is concentrated in three scenarios: maternity cover, partner transitions, and overflow during M&A or trial peaks. The April 2025 Employer NI rise from 13.8% to 15%, combined with the Secondary Threshold drop to £5,000, has added 2-3% to the cost of every permanent hire and pushed some firms toward fixed-term contracts as a budget release valve. However, IR35 enforcement means most legal EA contracts now fall Inside IR35, eroding the contractor's headline rate advantage and reducing the tax efficiency that historically attracted experienced EAs to contracting. The net effect is that permanent remains the dominant model for partner-level EA support.

2026 Forecast

Salary inflation for senior legal EAs in London is projected at 4-6% in 2026, outpacing general administrative growth of 2-3%, per Morgan Spencer's published market data. Three drivers are pushing this premium: continued Grade A office expansion (over 500,000 sq m planning permission granted in the City in 2025), financial services and law firm recommitments to London (HSBC, JPMorgan, Barclays expanding; US firms continuing to grow London headcount), and the digital skills gap narrowing the supply of EAs combining senior judgement with AI tool fluency. Expect continued volatility at the top end (£70,000 to £95,000) where US firms and Silver Circle compete head-to-head, and stabilisation in the £40,000 to £55,000 mid-band where mid-tier and West End firms set the floor. Multilingual capability (Mandarin, Arabic, French) will continue to command the highest premium uplift at 13-27%.

How We Benchmark Legal EA Salaries

Our salary benchmarking process is built into every legal EA assignment we run. Each step adds calibration that off-the-shelf salary surveys can't.

Step 1: We pull live placement data from the last 90 days for comparable roles by firm tier, partner-support model and practice area.

Step 2: We cross-reference candidate salary disclosures captured during qualification calls with the same firm tier and seniority.

Step 3: We layer on published survey data from Robert Half, Robert Walters, Lily Shippen, SecsintheCity and Morgan McKinley to confirm market alignment.

Step 4: We adjust for skills premium based on the role's required tech stack and language capability.

Step 5: We deliver the benchmark to the hiring manager with a recommended offer band and a counter-offer resilience assessment for the lead candidate.

For the recruitment-side framework that sits behind these benchmarks, see our Executive Assistant recruitment service for London law firms. US firms pay 15-25% above Magic Circle rates at every level, and multilingual EAs add 13-27% on top.

How much do US law firms pay legal EAs in London?

US firms in London (Kirkland, Latham, Skadden, Ropes & Gray) pay senior legal EAs £65,000 to £95,000+ in base salary, with bonuses commonly 15-30% on top. The premium reflects Cravath-scale lawyer salaries cascading to support and the 4-5 day office attendance commitment standard at US firms.

What day rate do contract legal EAs charge in London?

Inside IR35 contract legal EAs typically charge £250 per day via umbrella, equivalent to about £57,500 over 230 working days. Outside IR35 limited company contractors charge £300 per day, equivalent to about £69,000. National median EA contract day rate is £238 per IT Jobs Watch September 2025 data.

Why are senior legal EA salaries rising faster than general admin pay?

Senior legal EA salary inflation is projected at 4-6% in 2026, against 2-3% for general administrative roles. Three drivers explain it: tightening supply of EAs with the right legal tech stack, financial services and law firm recommitments to London, and the AI skills gap narrowing the candidate pool further.

Should we use day rate or annual salary when comparing contractors and permanent staff?

Use total cost-to-employer. A £65,000 permanent senior legal EA costs the firm £82,000 to £86,000 once pension, bonus, medical and Employer NI are loaded in. An Inside IR35 contractor at £250/day costs about £60,000 to £62,000 with no benefits liability. The decision depends on continuity needs, not headline rate.

Get a Calibrated Salary Benchmark

If you're benchmarking a London legal EA role against live market data and want a recommendation that maps your firm tier, partner-support model and tech stack to the right offer band, contact our specialist legal recruitment team for a tailored benchmark.

Definition, responsibilities, career path and qualifications for legal Executive Assistants in London. Salary ranges and progression routes explained

What is an Executive Assistant for a Law Firm? The 2026 Career Guide

An Executive Assistant for law firms is a senior business support professional responsible for managing partners' diaries, client liaison, conflicts and document workflow using iManage, BigHand and Microsoft 365. The role acts as a confidentiality-bound gatekeeper and operations partner, supporting fee-earners on transactional, contentious and regulatory matters across UK legal practices.

This guide breaks down what a legal EA actually does day-to-day, the career path from junior Legal Secretary to EA to Managing Partner, how the role differs from Legal Secretary and Paralegal, and the questions candidates ask most about the path.

Key Takeaways

A legal EA in London earns £48,000 to £95,000+ depending on seniority, with US firms paying 15-25% above Magic Circle.

No law degree required. The standard expected qualification is the ILSPA Legal Secretaries Diploma.

Career path runs from Junior Legal Secretary through to EA to Managing Partner / Practice Manager (£80,000 to £100,000+).

Standard tech stack: iManage, BigHand, InTapp, Carpe Diem, Chrome River, Microsoft 365 with Copilot.

Distinct from Paralegal (no charge-out rate) and Legal Secretary (1:1 partner support, not team-only support).

Core Responsibilities and a Day in the Life

Legal EAs split their time across diary management, document production, billing support, client liaison and project work. Time allocation typically runs 30-40% diary and inbox, 25-30% document production, 15-20% expenses/billing/time, 10-15% client liaison and 5-10% projects/BD support, per published Morgan Spencer guidance and ILSPA materials.

Daily Tasks

Managing complex partner diaries across multiple time zones, including court dates, completion meetings and client calls.

Screening calls, emails and gatekeeping access to partners during deal completion or trial windows.

Processing time entries into Carpe Diem, InTapp Time or Aderant on behalf of fee-earners.

Drafting and formatting legal correspondence, engagement letters and matter opening documents.

Filing documents into iManage or NetDocuments under matter-centric naming conventions.

Liaising with clients, opposing counsel and barristers' clerks via phone and email.

Weekly Tasks

Coordinating travel, accommodation and visa logistics for international transactions and client meetings.

Submitting partner expenses through Chrome River or Concur, reconciling against client matters.

Preparing court bundles, completion bibles or board packs for partner meetings.

Running conflict checks via InTapp or firm-specific systems before new client engagement.

Monthly Tasks

Supporting WIP reviews, billing narratives and client invoice production.

Coordinating CPD records, SRA continuing competence submissions and partner training.

Managing client relationship hospitality, sector events and client team summits.

For broader context on diary management at scale, see our diary management tips for PAs, which covers the workflow logic that scales from junior PA to senior partner support.

Career Path Progression

The London legal EA career path runs across five clear stages, with three common alternative routes for EAs who want to step sideways rather than continue up the partner-support ladder.

The Standard Five-Stage Path

Junior Legal Secretary / Trainee Legal PA (0-3 years, £30,000 to £42,000): entry point. Typing, filing, basic diary work, learning the firm's tech stack and confidentiality protocols. ILSPA Legal Secretaries Diploma typically started at this stage.

Legal PA / Legal Secretary (3-6 years, £42,000 to £58,000) | Transition: ILSPA diploma completion plus first 1:1 partner support assignment. Wider scope including basic billing, travel coordination and client liaison.

Senior Legal PA / EA to Partner (6-10 years, £55,000 to £72,000) | Transition: trusted with confidential M&A or contentious matter support, often at named partner level. Direct partner relationship and BD involvement.

EA to Senior Partner / Global Senior Partner (10-15 years, £65,000 to £85,000) | Transition: international travel coordination, cross-border deal exposure, Magic Circle or US firm hire. Managing complex partner profile across global office network.

EA to Managing Partner / Head of Business Support / Practice Manager (15+ years, £80,000 to £100,000+) | Transition: line management of EA pool, often a hybrid EA/operations role. Strategic input on EA team structure and firm-wide support workflow.

For the full pay data behind each stage, see our Executive Assistant law firm salary guide for London 2026.

Alternative Paths

Lateral move into in-house EA at FTSE 100 GC office offers commercial exposure, often comparable salary, lower hours and a more predictable hybrid pattern.

Pivot into Legal Operations / Practice Manager moves the EA into people management, away from 1:1 partner support, with team leadership and operational ownership.

Move into Legal Tech (BigHand, iManage, Litera) as a customer success or training specialist is a rising 2026 trend, leveraging deep tech-stack knowledge into a vendor-side career.

For more on when firms upgrade EA support to a different role entirely, see our analysis of Chief of Staff vs Executive Assistant and when to upgrade your support.

Executive Assistant vs Legal Secretary

The two titles overlap heavily in mid-tier firms but separate sharply at Magic Circle and US firm level. Knowing which is which matters for candidates choosing roles and for hiring managers writing job specs.

The Overlap: both manage diaries, format documents, file in iManage and support fee-earners with administrative work. Both require confidentiality and SRA awareness.

The Difference: a Legal Secretary typically supports a team of 4-8 fee-earners on largely clerical work. An Executive Assistant works 1:1 or 1:2 with partners on judgement-led tasks including business development, client liaison and confidential matter handling.

The Litmus Test: ask "Who decides which meetings the partner accepts?" If it's the candidate, they're operating as an EA. If it's the partner with the candidate booking confirmations, they're operating as a Legal Secretary.

For a wider EA versus PA breakdown beyond the legal sector, see our guide to Executive Assistant vs Personal Assistant and which you actually need.

Executive Assistant vs Paralegal

The two roles share the law firm environment and the iManage system but do entirely different work. Hiring the wrong one for the brief wastes 90 days minimum.

The Overlap: both hold confidential matter information, work to fee-earner deadlines and use iManage.

The Difference: a Paralegal performs substantive legal work (drafting pleadings, due diligence, research) and is sometimes time-recorded against client matters as a fee earner. An EA handles operational and administrative support with no fee-earning role.

The Litmus Test: ask "Does this person have a charge-out rate?" Paralegals typically do. EAs typically don't.

Qualifications and Entry Requirements

The standard expected qualification for a UK legal EA is the ILSPA Legal Secretaries Diploma plus secretarial experience, not a law degree. The diploma provides the legal knowledge and practical skills to operate confidently in a partner-support role.

A degree in any subject is increasingly common at Magic Circle and US firm level, but not required. Law-related qualifications can accelerate progression to EA-to-Partner roles within 3-5 years rather than the standard 6+. Magic Circle firms typically hire EAs through specialist legal recruiters (McKinlay Law, Morgan Spencer, Career Legal, Owen Reed), not direct applications.

For advice on positioning your CV for a senior EA role, see our CV writing service which covers how to frame partner-support experience for legal recruiters. For the firm-side view of how senior legal EAs are hired in London, see our Executive Assistant recruitment guide for London law firms.

FAQs

How much does a legal Executive Assistant earn in London?

London legal EA salaries sit between £42,000 and £95,000 depending on seniority, with the median for mid-level Legal PAs at £45,000 to £55,000 and senior EAs to partners commanding £60,000 to £75,000. US firms pay 15-25% above Magic Circle, and multilingual capability adds another 13-27% on top of base.

Do you need a law degree to be an Executive Assistant for a law firm?

No. The standard expected qualification is the ILSPA Legal Secretaries Diploma plus secretarial experience, not a law degree. A degree (any subject) is increasingly common at Magic Circle and US firm level, and law-related qualifications can accelerate progression to EA-to-Partner roles within 3-5 years.

Is being a legal EA stressful?

Yes, peak intensity is high. US firm EAs commonly report 12-14 hour days during deal completions or trials, and Magic Circle EAs work 10-12 hour days during deal windows. The trade-off is salary, prestige and the most senior commercial exposure of any UK administrative role.

Can a legal EA work remotely?

Partially. Magic Circle firms typically operate 3-4 days in office, US firms 4-5 days, boutiques and in-house teams 2-3 days. Fully remote legal EA roles are rare because of partner support, document handling and confidentiality requirements. Hybrid is the standard 2026 model.

What software do legal EAs use?

The standard UK legal EA tech stack is iManage Work or NetDocuments for documents, BigHand for dictation and workflow, InTapp for conflicts and walls, Carpe Diem or Aderant for time recording, Chrome River or Concur for expenses, and Microsoft 365 with Copilot for daily productivity. Otter.ai and Motion are emerging in 2026.

How do I become an Executive Assistant at a Magic Circle law firm?

The standard path is 5+ years as a Legal PA at a mid-tier or US firm, plus the ILSPA Legal Secretaries Diploma and demonstrable proficiency in iManage and BigHand. Magic Circle firms typically hire EAs through specialist legal recruiters, not direct applications.

Submit Your CV for Legal EA Opportunities

If you're a Legal PA or Legal Secretary ready to move into a senior EA seat in a London law firm, submit your CV to our specialist team and we'll match you to live partner-support opportunities across City, Holborn and Canary Wharf. Executive Assistant Recruitment for Law Firms in Holborn and Midtown

Holborn and Midtown sit at the historical and operational heart of UK litigation, and the legal EA market here reflects that. Senior salaries run £45,000 to £70,000 and mid-level roles at £38,000 to £52,000, with the most stable London legal hiring patterns and the longest average tenure. Walking distance to the Royal Courts of Justice, Lincoln's Inn, Gray's Inn, the Old Bailey and the Inns of Court makes this the cluster for litigation-led EA careers.

Key Takeaways

Holborn senior legal EA salaries: £45,000 to £70,000, mid-level £38,000 to £52,000.

Three primary clusters: Chancery Lane/Lincoln's Inn, High Holborn/Kingsway, Fleet Street/Temple.

Highest concentration of solicitors and barristers in the UK.

40+ mid-tier law firm London offices within 0.4 miles of High Holborn.

Anchor tenants include Mishcon de Reya, Farrer & Co, Withers, Mills & Reeve.

Holborn Talent Clusters

The Holborn / Midtown area runs across three distinct legal sub-clusters, each with its own salary norm and EA candidate profile.

Chancery Lane / Lincoln's Inn (WC2A, EC4A)

Litigation, family law, wills and probate, traditional partnership work. Anchor tenants: Mishcon de Reya (Africa House, Kingsway), Farrer & Co (66 Lincoln's Inn Fields), Bates Wells, Penningtons Manches Cooper. Talent density: the highest concentration of solicitors and barristers in the UK, with Lincoln's Inn and Gray's Inn alone housing thousands of barristers across hundreds of chambers.

This is the historical and operational heart of UK litigation. Walking distance to the Royal Courts of Justice, Lincoln's Inn, Gray's Inn, the Old Bailey and the Inns of Court means litigation EAs commute on foot to court bundles and hearings. Strong candidates here have tier-1 court bundle preparation, barristers' clerk liaison and trial logistics experience.

High Holborn / Kingsway (WC1V, WC2B)

Mid-tier UK firms, regional firm London offices, employment, real estate. Anchor tenants: Olswang (now CMS), Withers (20 Old Bailey), Mills & Reeve London, Buckles Solicitors (Chancery House), TLT. Talent density: 40+ mid-tier law firm London offices within 0.4 miles.

The Midtown CBD is one of the largest in the UK and the natural London base for regional firms scaling into the capital. Salaries sit 5-15% below Magic Circle but lifestyle and hours are more sustainable. EAs here typically support 1:2 or 1:3 partner pairs with broader scope and lower deal-completion intensity than City counterparts.

Fleet Street / Temple (EC4A, EC4Y)

Barristers chambers, traditional law, media and IP litigation. Anchor tenants: Inner Temple, Middle Temple, leading commercial chambers including 7KBW, Brick Court, Essex Court Chambers. Talent density: the Inns of Court collectively house 12,000+ barristers and supporting staff.

Barristers' chambers EA roles are a distinct sub-market with EA/Office Manager hybrid scope. The talent pool here transfers well between chambers and litigation-led law firms, and chambers experience is increasingly valued by litigation practices recruiting at senior level.

Why Holborn Matters for Legal EA Hiring

Three factors make Holborn a structurally different hiring market from the City and Canary Wharf.

Litigation density: the proximity to the Royal Courts of Justice, Inns of Court and Old Bailey concentrates litigation work here in a way no other London cluster matches. Specialist litigation EA experience is more common in Holborn candidates than anywhere else in London. For the full London-wide hiring framework, see our Executive Assistant recruitment guide for London law firms.

Tenure stability: Holborn is the most stable London legal hiring market, with lower volatility than the City or Canary Wharf and longer average tenure. Hiring patterns are predictable and counter-offer rates are lower.

Dual sourcing: the chambers market overlaps with the law firm market here, opening dual sourcing channels for litigation-aligned EA candidates. EAs with chambers experience often transfer successfully into litigation-led law firms.

For broader context on the London business support market, see our review of how modern roles are reshaping London's workplace.

Holborn Legal EA Market Context

Average salary (senior): £45,000 to £70,000 for Senior Legal PA / EA roles.

Average salary (mid-level): £38,000 to £52,000.

Hiring activity: steady and consistent, the most stable London legal hiring market.

Unique factor: the Inns of Court chambers market overlaps with the law firm market, opening dual sourcing channels for litigation-aligned EA candidates.

For pay bands across every London legal EA tier including the Magic Circle and US firm premium, see our Executive Assistant law firm salary guide for London 2026.

Semantic Keywords for the Holborn Market

Holborn, Chancery Lane, Midtown, Lincoln's Inn Fields, Gray's Inn, Royal Courts of Justice, Inns of Court, Inner Temple, Middle Temple, Old Bailey, Fleet Street, Fetter Lane, Kingsway, High Holborn, WC1V, WC2A, EC4A, EC4Y, Farringdon, City Thameslink, Elizabeth Line.

Morgan Spencer's Holborn Network

Our Holborn team has placed Legal PAs and Executive Assistants with employers across Chancery Lane, Lincoln's Inn and High Holborn, including Mishcon de Reya, Farrer & Co, Withers, Mills & Reeve and leading commercial chambers in the Inns of Court.

Holborn briefs typically prioritise litigation experience, court bundle preparation, family law confidentiality protocols and chambers liaison capability. We maintain dual sourcing across the law firm and chambers candidate pools, giving Holborn briefs access to candidates other agencies miss.

For candidates moving into litigation-led EA seats from chambers, our guide to what an Executive Assistant for a law firm actually does sets out the responsibilities, career path and qualifications expected at senior level. For our broader sector capability, see our Legal & Compliance Recruitment service.

How We Hire Legal EAs in Holborn

Our Holborn placement process is calibrated to the cluster's litigation focus and dual sourcing opportunity.

Step 1: We confirm which sub-cluster (Chancery Lane, High Holborn, Fleet Street/Temple) and which firm or chambers type the brief sits in.

Step 2: We confirm partner or fee-earner support model and the practice area, weighted heavily toward litigation, family law, real estate and employment.

Step 3: We confirm court bundle and trial logistics experience requirements where relevant.

Step 4: We deliver a calibrated long-list of 5-7 candidates including chambers transfers where the brief allows.

Step 5: We coordinate two-stage interviews and manage offer through onboarding.

FAQs

Why are Holborn legal EA salaries lower than the City?

Holborn salaries run 5-15% below Magic Circle and US firm rates because the cluster is dominated by mid-tier UK firms, traditional partnerships and chambers rather than international Magic Circle work. The trade-off is more sustainable hours, lower deal-completion intensity and longer average tenure.

Do Holborn law firms still require court bundle preparation skills?

Yes. Litigation EAs in Chancery Lane and Fleet Street routinely prepare hearing bundles, trial bundles and indexed court papers. The skill is non-negotiable for senior litigation EA roles and is one of the main differentiators between Holborn and corporate City briefs.

Can chambers EAs move into law firms?

Yes, and this is a regular Morgan Spencer placement pattern. Chambers EAs with strong barristers' clerk liaison, trial logistics and chambers operations experience transfer well into litigation-led law firms, often with a salary uplift on the move.

Is hybrid working more common in Holborn than the City?

Yes. Mid-tier and West End firms in the Holborn area typically operate 3:2 or 2:3 hybrid patterns, more flexible than the City's 4-day norm. This makes Holborn attractive to candidates prioritising work-life balance.

Brief Us on Your Holborn Legal EA Hire

If you're filling a senior EA seat in a Holborn law firm or chambers and want a shortlist that maps to your sub-cluster, practice area and hybrid pattern, contact our specialist legal recruitment team.

Hire legal Executive Assistants in Canary Wharf. Magic Circle, US firm and in-house bank legal team coverage with Morgan Spencer.

Executive Assistant Recruitment for Law Firms in Canary Wharf

Executive Assistant Recruitment for Law Firms in Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf is the second-largest UK legal headcount cluster after the City of London, and its EA market reflects the Magic Circle and US firm concentration. Senior legal EA salaries run £60,000 to £95,000, mid-level roles £48,000 to £62,000, and the cluster operates a near-universal 4-5 day office attendance pattern. Direct integration with major banking clients (Barclays, HSBC, JPMorgan, Citi, Morgan Stanley) means transactional work originates and completes within walking distance.

Key Takeaways

Canary Wharf senior legal EA salaries: £60,000 to £95,000, mid-level £48,000 to £62,000.

Three primary clusters: Upper Bank Street/Bank Street, Canada Square/Cabot Square, Wood Wharf.

4-5 day office attendance is standard, with limited hybrid flexibility.

Counter-offers are most aggressive here because the candidate pool is narrowest.

Anchor tenants include Clifford Chance, Skadden, A&O Shearman, HSBC and Barclays in-house teams.

Canary Wharf Talent Clusters

The Wharf hosts three distinct legal and in-house sub-clusters, each with its own salary band and candidate profile.

Upper Bank Street / Bank Street (E14 5JJ, E14 5LB)

Magic Circle and global elite corporate law, banking, capital markets. Anchor tenants: Clifford Chance (10 Upper Bank Street, E14 5JJ), Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, Allen & Overy (now A&O Shearman, with Canary Wharf presence), Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer business services (16th floor, Bank Street). Talent density: 3,500+ legal professionals concentrated in two streets, with Clifford Chance alone housing 2,000+ staff at 10 Upper Bank Street.

The pioneering Magic Circle move (Clifford Chance, 2003) seeded the cluster and it has grown into the second-largest UK legal headcount after the City. Direct integration with banking clients means transactional work originates and completes within walking distance, with EAs supporting partners across global M&A, capital markets and finance practices.

Canada Square / Cabot Square (E14 5AB, E14 4QJ)

In-house legal teams, bank legal departments, financial regulatory law. Anchor tenants: HSBC Group (8 Canada Square), Barclays (1 Churchill Place), Citigroup (25 Canada Square), JPMorgan Chase (25 Bank Street). Talent density: an estimated 5,000+ in-house legal and compliance professionals across the major bank towers.

This is the dominant in-house EA-to-GC market in the UK. Salaries match law firm rates with a better hours profile and a stronger 2026 hiring trajectory as banks recommit to London headcount. EAs here typically support General Counsel, Heads of Legal and senior in-house counsel rather than fee-earning partners.

Wood Wharf (E14 4SD)

Emerging mixed-use legal and financial expansion zone. Anchor tenants: latest Canary Wharf Group developments housing tech-enabled financial services and emerging in-house legal teams. HSBC's planned move to 8 Bishopsgate is freeing major Canary Wharf space, reshaping the cluster.

Wood Wharf is the next-generation expansion area as some traditional Canary Wharf banks consolidate or relocate. Emerging in-house legal teams here will drive 2026-27 EA hiring, and tracking new lettings during 2026 is a key sourcing intelligence priority.

Why Canary Wharf Matters for Legal EA Hiring

Three structural factors define the Wharf as a distinct hiring market.

Magic Circle and US firm concentration: Clifford Chance, Skadden and A&O Shearman maintain major offices here, creating a partner-EA seat density unmatched outside the City. Salaries reflect that, with senior EA roles regularly running £75,000 to £95,000+ at the top end. For the full London-wide hiring framework that sits behind these placements, see our Executive Assistant recruitment guide for London law firms.

Banking client integration: the proximity to HSBC, Barclays, JPMorgan, Citi and Morgan Stanley means deal teams operate across a single postcode. EAs coordinate logistics across client banks within 5-10 minutes' walking distance, accelerating completion timelines.

Geographic concentration: the cluster is small and tightly packed. Candidate movement between firms is high-friction (commute lock-in) and salaries trend higher to compensate. Counter-offers are most aggressive here because the candidate pool is narrowest.

For wider context on what top EAs expect from London hybrid and remote offers, see our analysis of balancing remote vs hybrid work offerings.

Canary Wharf Legal EA Market Context

Average salary (senior): £60,000 to £95,000 for senior Legal EA roles (US firm and Magic Circle premium).

Average salary (mid-level): £48,000 to £62,000.

Hiring activity: high but compressed, driven by Magic Circle and US firm presence plus growing in-house bank legal demand.

Unique factor: 4-5 day office attendance is standard at law firm offices, more limited hybrid than Holborn or the West End. Counter-offers are most aggressive here because the candidate pool is narrowest.

For pay bands behind every Canary Wharf seniority including the US firm and Magic Circle premium, see our Executive Assistant law firm salary guide for London 2026.

Semantic Keywords for the Canary Wharf Market

Canary Wharf, Docklands, Upper Bank Street, Bank Street, Canada Square, Cabot Square, Wood Wharf, One Canada Square, Churchill Place, the Wharf, E14, DLR, Elizabeth Line, Jubilee Line, North Greenwich, Crossrail, Isle of Dogs, West India Docks.

Morgan Spencer's Canary Wharf Network

Our Canary Wharf team has placed Executive Assistants with employers across Upper Bank Street, Canada Square and Cabot Square, including Clifford Chance, Skadden, in-house legal teams at HSBC, Barclays and JPMorgan.

Canary Wharf briefs typically prioritise Magic Circle or US firm exposure, banking and capital markets practice familiarity, and demonstrated 4-5 day office commitment. Our in-house bank GC-EA pool overlaps with the law firm pool, giving us dual sourcing channels for hybrid in-house and law firm briefs.

For candidates moving into senior partner-EA seats at the Wharf, our guide to what an Executive Assistant for a law firm actually does sets out the responsibilities, career path and qualifications expected at Magic Circle and US firm level. For our broader sector capability, see our Legal & Compliance Recruitment service.

How We Hire Legal EAs in Canary Wharf

Our Canary Wharf placement process accounts for the cluster's high counter-offer environment and tight candidate pool.

Step 1: We confirm whether the brief is law firm (Upper Bank Street) or in-house (Canada Square / Cabot Square), and the seniority of the supported partner or GC.

Step 2: We confirm the practice area or in-house specialism, mapping to the right candidate sub-pool.

Step 3: We confirm the office-attendance pattern, weighted toward the Wharf's 4-5 day norm, and check candidate commute tolerance.

Step 4: We deliver a calibrated long-list of 5-7 candidates pre-screened on the firm's specific tech stack and the partner's working style.

Step 5: We run intensive counter-offer resilience coaching during the offer phase, given the cluster's high retention-offer rate.

FAQs

Why do Canary Wharf legal EAs earn more than City counterparts?

Two factors. First, US firm and Magic Circle concentration creates direct salary competition for the top end of the candidate pool. Second, the 4-5 day office attendance norm narrows the pool of candidates willing to commit, pushing salaries up to compensate. Senior EAs at Clifford Chance and US firms regularly run £75,000 to £95,000+.

Is hybrid working possible in Canary Wharf law firms?

Limited. Most Canary Wharf law firm offices operate 4-5 day attendance, with US firms trending toward 5 days. Some Magic Circle firms allow 3:2 hybrid for support staff, but this is becoming less common. Candidates prioritising hybrid often look at Holborn or West End firms instead.

Can in-house bank EAs transfer to law firms?

Yes, but the transition needs care. Bank in-house EA experience translates well into Magic Circle and US firm in-house liaison roles, but the workflow intensity (deal completions, longer hours) is significantly higher. We brief candidates carefully on the trade-off before introduction.

How aggressive are counter-offers in Canary Wharf?

Very. Counter-offer frequency runs above the 35% London average for senior EA candidates, with Magic Circle and US firms most aggressive. Counter-offer resilience coaching is essential for any Canary Wharf legal EA hire, and Morgan Spencer builds this into every offer phase.

Brief Us on Your Canary Wharf Legal EA Hire

If you're filling a senior EA seat at a Canary Wharf law firm or in-house legal team and want a shortlist that maps to the cluster's salary, attendance and counter-offer dynamics, contact our specialist legal recruitment team.

They eliminate the operational friction that occurs when language barriers impede client relationships, stakeholder communications, and cross-border project coordination. For family offices managing UHNW portfolios across multiple jurisdictions, these professionals ensure confidential communications remain accurate and culturally appropriate.

The commercial impact extends beyond translation. Executive support roles in global organisations require professionals who can anticipate cultural expectations, adapt communication styles to different markets, and maintain relationships across time zones. This cultural intelligence prevents costly misunderstandings and strengthens international partnerships.

How do bilingual EAs improve international communication?

Bilingual executive assistants improve international communication by providing real-time translation during calls, accurately conveying tone and context in written correspondence, and ensuring cultural protocols are observed. They eliminate the delays and potential errors associated with external translation services, enabling immediate decision-making and relationship building.

What cultural advantages do bilingual PAs bring to a London office?

Bilingual personal assistants bring deep cultural understanding that extends beyond language fluency. They manage business etiquette differences, understand appropriate gift-giving protocols, recognise religious and cultural holidays that affect scheduling, and adapt meeting styles to suit different cultural preferences, ensuring international stakeholders feel respected and understood.

How do bilingual assistants support global business expansion?

Bilingual assistants support global business expansion by conducting market research in native languages, coordinating with overseas offices using local business practices, managing international travel arrangements with cultural awareness, and maintaining relationships with foreign partners through regular, culturally appropriate communication that builds trust and facilitates deal-making.

How does a Specialist Recruitment Agency find Bilingual Talent?

Specialist recruitment agencies access bilingual talent through targeted sourcing strategies that extend beyond traditional job boards. We maintain relationships with international business schools, cultural organisations, and professional associations where multilingual candidates naturally congregate. Our network includes professionals who have relocated to London from key business markets, bringing native-level fluency and cultural insight.

The vetting process requires sophisticated assessment techniques that evaluate both linguistic competency and executive support capabilities. We test conversational fluency, business writing skills, and cultural awareness through scenario-based interviews. This dual-competency assessment ensures candidates can perform complex administrative tasks while maintaining professional communication standards in multiple languages.

What is our process for vetting language proficiency?

Our language proficiency vetting involves structured conversations with native speakers, written assessments using business terminology, and role-play scenarios simulating client interactions. We evaluate grammar accuracy, vocabulary range, cultural appropriateness, and the ability to switch between formal and informal registers depending on the business context and relationship dynamics.

How do we assess executive support skills and experience?

We assess executive support skills through competency-based interviews focusing on diary management complexity, stakeholder relationship management, and crisis response capabilities. Candidates demonstrate their experience managing C-suite calendars, coordinating international travel, and handling confidential information while maintaining the discretion and professionalism expected in UHNW environments.

What makes our candidate network unique for bilingual roles?

Our candidate network is unique because we actively cultivate relationships with multilingual professionals who have specific experience supporting international business operations. They demonstrate native or near-native proficiency in at least two languages, with particular strength in business communication and formal correspondence. Technical competency includes advanced proficiency in international scheduling systems, multi-currency expense management, and cross-border travel coordination.

Professional qualities extend to discretion, adaptability, and proactive problem-solving. These professionals anticipate needs across different cultural contexts, maintain confidentiality in sensitive international dealings, and demonstrate resilience when managing complex, multi-jurisdictional projects. The rise of the multi-skilled support professional reflects the increasing demand for versatile candidates who can operate effectively across cultural and linguistic boundaries.

Which languages are most in demand for London-based roles?

The most in-demand languages for London-based bilingual assistant roles include French, German, Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, and Russian. This demand reflects London's position as a global financial centre, with particular emphasis on languages that support major trading relationships, family office client bases, and emerging market opportunities in Asia and the Middle East.

What administrative skills are critical for bilingual PAs?

Critical administrative skills for bilingual personal assistants include international diary coordination across multiple time zones, multi-currency expense reporting, visa and immigration documentation management, cross-border event planning, and the ability to research and summarise information from foreign-language sources while maintaining accuracy and cultural context.

How do we ensure discretion and professionalism in bilingual support staff?

We ensure discretion and professionalism through comprehensive background checks, reference verification with previous international employers, and assessment of their understanding of confidentiality requirements in different cultural contexts. Recruit discreet, trusted personal assistants for your private household. Our specialist agency connects UHNW families with exceptional PA talent. Contact us today

Personal Assistant Recruitment for Private Households

Recruiting a personal assistant for your private household requires absolute discretion, unwavering trust, and an understanding of UHNW family dynamics that most agencies simply don't possess. The stakes are higher when your PA manages intimate family schedules, confidential communications, and access to your private residence. Our Executive Assistant and PA recruitment expertise extends into the unique demands of private household staffing, where standard corporate recruitment approaches fail.

Why Specialist Private Household PA Recruitment Matters for UHNW Families

What unique challenges do UHNW families face in PA recruitment?

UHNW families encounter recruitment challenges that extend far beyond standard hiring processes. Security clearance requirements, non-disclosure agreements, and the need for candidates who can seamlessly integrate into complex family dynamics create barriers that eliminate most traditional recruitment channels. The candidate pool shrinks dramatically when you require someone who can manage both professional responsibilities and personal family matters with equal competence.

How does discretion impact private household PA hiring?

Discretion in private household PA recruitment means candidates must demonstrate proven experience in confidential environments where information security isn't just professional courtesy but family protection. This requires background verification that goes beyond standard employment checks, including character references from previous private household roles and demonstrated understanding of privacy protocols that protect family reputation and personal security.

Why is trust paramount for private household personal assistants?

Trust becomes the foundation of private household PA relationships because these professionals gain access to family schedules, personal communications, financial information, and often physical access to private residences. Unlike corporate EAs who work within structured office environments, private household PAs operate independently, making decisions that directly impact family life, requiring absolute reliability and sound judgement in sensitive situations.

Qualities of an Exceptional Private Household Personal Assistant

The distinction between corporate executive assistants and private household PAs lies in the breadth of responsibilities and the personal nature of the support provided. Our analysis of EA versus PA roles and which you actually need highlights how private household positions require a unique skill set that combines professional competency with personal service excellence.

What core competencies define a top private household PA?

Top private household PAs possess advanced project management skills, multilingual capabilities, and cultural sensitivity that allows them to coordinate international travel, manage multiple residences, and interface with diverse service providers. They demonstrate proficiency in both traditional PA duties like complex diary management and household-specific responsibilities including staff coordination, vendor management, and event planning for private entertaining.

How important are soft skills for private household PAs?

Soft skills determine success in private household PA roles more than technical competencies. Emotional intelligence, adaptability, and intuitive service delivery separate exceptional candidates from merely qualified ones. The ability to anticipate needs, manage competing priorities with grace, and maintain composure during high-stress situations becomes critical when supporting families with complex, changing schedules and high-stakes personal commitments.

What experience should private household PAs possess?

Ideal private household PA candidates bring experience from luxury hospitality, high-net-worth family offices, or previous private household roles where they've managed confidential information and complex logistics. This background provides understanding of service standards expected in private environments, familiarity with luxury service providers, and proven ability to maintain discretion while delivering proactive support that enhances rather than disrupts family life.

For practical context on the diary workload behind these roles, see our diary management tips for PAs, which covers the workflow logic that scales from corporate to private household support.

How We Source and Vet Private Household PA Talent

How do we source private household PA talent?

We maintain an exclusive network of private household professionals through relationships with luxury hospitality training programmes, family office networks, and referrals from successfully placed candidates. Our sourcing strategy targets candidates currently working in private households, luxury hotels, or family offices who seek career progression into more senior private household roles, ensuring they already understand the discretion and service standards required.

What is our vetting process for private household PAs?

Our vetting process includes comprehensive background checks, character references from previous private employers, and scenario-based interviews that assess judgement in sensitive situations. We verify employment history with particular attention to reasons for leaving previous private household roles, conduct competency assessments for key skills like travel coordination and vendor management, and evaluate cultural fit through detailed discussions about family dynamics and household management styles.

How do we ensure cultural fit for private household placements?

Cultural fit assessment involves understanding both family values and candidate compatibility through structured interviews that explore communication styles, problem-solving approaches, and service philosophy. We facilitate preliminary meetings between shortlisted candidates and family members to assess interpersonal chemistry, discuss expectations openly, and ensure alignment on working arrangements, boundaries, and long-term career objectives within the household structure.

For the broader perspective on what defines exceptional senior support professionals in London right now, see our review of the rise of the multi-skilled support professional and why versatility is the new currency.

Benefits of Partnering with a Private Household PA Recruitment Agency

How does an agency simplify private household PA hiring?

Specialist agencies simplify private household PA hiring by managing the entire recruitment process while maintaining family privacy and confidentiality. We handle initial candidate screening, coordinate interviews around family schedules, manage reference checks and background verification, and facilitate contract negotiations, allowing families to focus on final candidate selection rather than administrative recruitment tasks that can consume weeks of valuable time.

What access to talent does a specialist agency provide?

Specialist agencies provide access to passive candidates currently employed in private households who aren't actively job searching but may consider exceptional opportunities. Our established relationships with leading private household professionals mean we can approach candidates discreetly, present opportunities confidentially, and facilitate career moves that benefit both families and candidates without disrupting current employment relationships unnecessarily.

How does an agency mitigate risks in private household PA recruitment?

Agency partnership mitigates recruitment risks through professional indemnity insurance, guaranteed replacement periods if placements don't succeed, and structured onboarding processes that ensure smooth integration. We provide ongoing support during the initial employment period, mediate any adjustment issues, and maintain relationships with both parties to address concerns before they become problems, protecting your investment in the recruitment process.

For the strategic context on retaining senior support staff once placed, see our strategy guide to attracting and retaining top executive support talent in London.

Hiring Executive Assistants?

Morgan Spencer connects you with experienced executive assistants. Contact our team to discuss your hiring needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find a discreet personal assistant for my private household?

Finding a discreet personal assistant for a private household typically involves partnering with a specialist recruitment agency. These agencies have established networks and rigorous vetting processes to identify candidates with proven experience in confidential environments. They understand the unique requirements of UHNW families, ensuring candidates possess both the skills and the necessary level of discretion for sensitive roles.

What are the benefits of using a specialist agency for private PA recruitment?

Using a specialist agency for private PA recruitment offers several benefits. Agencies provide access to a pre-vetted pool of qualified candidates, saving significant time and effort. They ensure confidentiality throughout the process and possess expertise in assessing the specific soft skills and experience required for private household roles, leading to more successful and lasting placements for employers.

What qualities should I look for in a personal assistant for a UHNW family?

When hiring a personal assistant for a UHNW family, look for qualities such as impeccable discretion, proactive problem-solving, and exceptional organisational skills. Adaptability, strong communication, and a calm demeanour under pressure are also crucial. Candidates should demonstrate a deep understanding of privacy, loyalty, and the ability to anticipate needs without explicit instruction, ensuring seamless household operations.

What is the difference between a private PA and a corporate EA?

Private PAs focus on personal and household management tasks including family scheduling, domestic staff coordination, and private event planning, while corporate EAs concentrate on business support functions. Private PAs require greater discretion, flexibility with working hours, and ability to handle personal matters, whereas corporate EAs work within structured office environments with defined business processes and professional boundaries.

Part-time EA roles for London startup founders sit at £25-£42/hour or £35-£60k pro-rata. Scope, working pattern and the 15-hour decision threshold explained.

Part-Time Executive Assistant Jobs in London for Startup Founders

Part-time Executive Assistant roles for London startup founders sit at £25-£42 an hour or £35,000-£60,000 pro-rata depending on scope. The role suits founders running pre-Series A or Series A/B companies with 15-25 hours a week of EA-grade work, where a full-time hire isn't yet justified.

Key takeaways

Part-time EA roles for London startup founders pay £25-£42 an hour or £35,000-£60,000 pro-rata at full-time equivalent in 2026.

The decision threshold sits at 15-25 hours per week of EA work; below 15 hours an outsourced service usually wins, above 25 hours a full-time hire makes more economic sense.

Semrush UK data shows "part time executive assistant london" at 90 monthly searches and "part time pa london" at 90 monthly searches at £0.86 CPC, signalling commercial intent from employer searches.

The candidate pool splits between experienced EAs returning from career breaks (often parent-led flexible working) and senior EAs choosing portfolio careers with 2-3 founder clients in parallel.

Founder-level EA work demands specific traits absent from corporate EA hiring: rapid context switching, tolerance for fluid scope, and the judgment to make decisions without escalation.

Why does a startup founder need a part-time EA rather than full-time or outsourced support?

A part-time EA fits the 15-25 hour weekly workload that sits between outsourced diary management (under 15 hours) and full-time EA support (above 25 hours). Pre-Series A and Series A/B founders typically hit this band when fundraising activity, board reporting and customer demos collide.

Outsourced diary management at £1,500-£4,500 a month works under 15 hours but can't anticipate scope expansion or handle confidential founder work like board pack drafts, investor updates and personnel matters. Above 25 hours, the part-time arrangement starts losing efficiency to a full-time hire because the founder spends increasing time briefing rather than executing.

The part-time EA model also fits founders with revenue cycles that don't yet justify £75,000+ fully-loaded permanent headcount. A part-time EA at £35,000-£40,000 pro-rata (working three days a week) costs £21,000-£24,000 annualised plus standard employer overhead, materially below a full-time EA at £55,000-£85,000 base.

What scope should a part-time EA for a startup founder cover?

Part-time EA scope at startup founder level typically covers diary management, inbox triage, board and investor meeting prep, travel coordination, customer meeting logistics and ad-hoc project work. The three-day-a-week pattern usually splits as two diary-heavy days (Monday and Thursday) and one project-day (mid-week).

Diary and inbox work absorbs 40-50% of weekly hours: founder calendar ownership, scheduling external meetings, inbox triage with delegated responses on standard categories, and follow-up tracking from board meetings and customer calls.

Board, investor and customer meeting prep absorbs 25-35% of weekly hours: board pack assembly, investor update drafting, customer meeting briefings (attendees, prior interaction history, agenda alignment), and post-meeting action item distribution. This work demands judgment about what the founder needs to see and what the EA can resolve directly.

Travel, logistics and ad-hoc project work absorb the remaining 20-30%: founder travel booking, conference and event logistics, occasional bookkeeping handoff to the firm's accountant, and project work assigned by the founder on a case-by-case basis. The work pattern in fundraising months looks different to the work pattern in product-launch months.

What salary should we offer a part-time EA for a startup founder?

Hourly rates for part-time EAs in London 2026 run £25-£42, with the full range reflecting experience seniority and scope complexity. Pro-rata annualised at three days a week (21 hours) ranges from £27,300 to £45,800.

Standard part-time EA (3-7 years' experience, mid-market scope): £25-£32 an hour, equivalent to £35,000-£45,000 pro-rata at full-time equivalent. Suits founders running Series A-B companies with structured weekly cadence.

Senior part-time EA (7-12 years' experience, including prior C-suite support): £30-£38 an hour, equivalent to £45,000-£55,000 pro-rata at full-time equivalent. Suits founders with mixed corporate-and-startup backgrounds needing investor-management exposure from the EA.

Portfolio EA (12+ years' experience, often running 2-3 founder clients in parallel): £35-£42 an hour, equivalent to £52,000-£60,000+ pro-rata at full-time equivalent. The portfolio model usually works on a retained day-rate basis rather than employed pay-as-you-go.

How do you assess a part-time EA candidate's fit for startup founder work?

Five candidate signals separate the EAs who thrive at startup founder level from those who don't.

Signal 1: rapid context-switching tolerance. Strong candidates describe weeks where they moved between fundraising prep, customer meeting logistics, board pack drafting and personnel matters without losing operational control. Weak candidates need consistent task flow to stay productive.

Signal 2: comfort with fluid scope. Strong candidates have worked roles where the founder added or removed responsibilities mid-quarter without renegotiating the contract. Weak candidates require defined JD boundaries and complain about scope creep.

Signal 3: judgment to make decisions without escalation. Strong candidates can articulate specific decisions they made independently (visitor protocol changes, vendor selection, calendar conflict resolution at investor level) that the founder learned about retrospectively and approved. Weak candidates escalate everything.

Signal 4: confidentiality at sustained pressure. Strong candidates have a documented track record of handling board pack drafts, investor confidential updates and personnel matters without breach. Weak candidates can't name specific confidentiality tests they've handled.

Signal 5: capacity to walk into informal environments. Strong candidates fit comfortably into co-working spaces, founder homes (where some founders work), and informal investor settings. Weak candidates need corporate office structure to function.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a part-time EA and a virtual assistant for a startup founder?

A part-time EA works set hours per week embedded in the founder's operations, holds confidential context across customers, investors and personnel, and exercises judgment on decisions without escalation. A virtual assistant works task-by-task across multiple clients, handles execution work assigned via brief, and rarely holds long-term confidential context.

Can a part-time EA scale into a full-time hire as the startup grows?

Yes, with a structured transition plan. Strong part-time EAs often move to full-time as the founder crosses the 25-hour weekly threshold, typically after Series A or Series B funding. The part-time-to-full-time transition reduces hiring risk because the founder already knows the candidate's judgment, scope flexibility and confidentiality handling.

What benefits should a part-time EA expect?

Standard part-time EA benefits in London 2026 include pro-rata holiday (25 days plus bank holidays at FTE), pro-rata pension matching at 3-5%, and usually no PMI or life insurance at three-day-a-week patterns. Some founders offer share options at startup equivalents to standard early-employee schemes, which can outweigh the absence of corporate-grade benefits over a 3-5 year horizon.

Speak to Morgan Spencer about your part-time EA hire

Morgan Spencer's Executive Assistant and PA recruitment team places part-time, full-time and portfolio EAs at startup founders, scale-ups and family offices across London. We pre-screen candidates on rapid context-switching, fluid-scope tolerance and confidentiality handling before any introduction.
